Signal International is an Italian-language video studio. We build courses that feel like watching a beautifully edited film — except that, by the closing credits, you have absorbed three new tenses, twenty-five new verbs, and the confidence to order a coffee in Bergamo without switching to English.
Our pipeline combines speech-recognition models trained on regional Italian accents, adaptive spaced-repetition tuned to each viewer, and a production team that shoots on location from Syracuse to Trieste. The result is a course that knows when you are struggling, knows when you are bored, and reshapes itself quietly around you.

Rigor without punishment

Technology that recedes
Speech analysis, eye-tracking, adaptive recall — our systems run silently beneath the surface. The viewer should never feel surveilled; only, somehow, understood.

Our engineering team builds four systems that quietly shape every viewing session. They are never named on screen, never shown as features. They exist only in the way the course adapts to you.
Regional accent recognition
Our listening model is trained on twelve regional Italian accents, so it understands you whether you learned the language in Turin or in Catania. It corrects gently, and only when correction is useful.
Adaptive spaced repetition
A vocabulary item you almost remembered at 11pm will reappear, in a different scene, at 8.14am the following day. The schedule is recalculated after every viewing session.
Withdrawing subtitle system
Subtitles fade, word by word, as your comprehension crosses a confidence threshold. By the final episode of each course, you are watching without a net — and you will not have noticed the moment it was removed.
On-location production
No green screens, no AI backgrounds. Every frame is shot where the language actually lives. A lesson on ordering coffee is filmed at a bar in Trieste; a lesson on the subjunctive is filmed where someone is genuinely hoping for something.

Prima Luce
A first light.
An eighteen-episode beginner course, filmed across the markets of Palermo, the kitchens of Bologna, and the harbours of Genoa. Designed for the absolute beginner; built to feel like the first season of a series you cannot stop watching.
The premise
Most beginner courses treat the first weeks of language learning as an exercise in tolerance — of stilted dialogues, of fluorescent classrooms, of phrases no Italian has uttered since 1962. Prima Luce refuses this. We film a young woman arriving in Palermo with no Italian, and we follow her, hour by hour, as she learns to feed herself, find a room, and make a friend. Every grammatical structure in the A1 curriculum appears naturally in her day. The viewer learns because the viewer is watching her learn.
The technology
Each episode runs between thirty-eight and forty-six minutes. Beneath the picture, four systems are running: regional speech recognition (so the viewer can repeat lines aloud and receive quiet correction), adaptive spaced repetition (which schedules the re-appearance of vocabulary at the moment of near-forgetting), the withdrawing subtitle system (which fades individual words as comprehension crosses threshold), and an eye-tracking layer (webcam-based, opt-in) that detects when a viewer is disengaged and gently re-engages them by re-contextualising the current scene.
The curriculum
Eighteen episodes, structured as three acts of six episodes each. Act one: arrival, food, shelter. Act two: direction, transaction, disagreement. Act three: opinion, narrative, friendship. By the final episode, the viewer has handled every CEFR A1 structure and most of A2, in the order an actual immigrant to Italy would encounter them.
The audience
Prima Luce is built for young adults — university students, early-career professionals, gap-year travellers — who have tried and abandoned at least one language app. We assume intelligence, we assume impatience, and we assume a low tolerance for condescension. We reward all three.

Studio details
Our production office sits between the Pantheon and the Tiber, on the third floor of a building that has, over four centuries, housed a printer, a fencing school, and a small opera company. We are pleased to continue that eclectic tradition.

01 Scope of this policy
This policy describes how Signal International collects, uses, and protects the personal information of viewers who subscribe to our newsletter, create an account, or otherwise interact with our courses and website. It does not cover third-party platforms we may integrate with; those are governed by their own policies.
02 Data we collect
We collect only what is required to deliver the service you have asked for. Specifically:
- Account information: name, email address, and a password hash.
- Viewing data: which episodes you have watched, and at what point you paused or rewatched. This is used to drive the adaptive recall system.
- Speech data: if you opt in to pronunciation feedback, short audio clips are processed locally on your device and never uploaded in their raw form.
- Eye-tracking data: if you opt in, webcam-derived gaze estimates are processed on-device. We receive only aggregated engagement scores, never the raw video.
03 How we use your data
We use your data to deliver the courses you have enrolled in, to adapt their difficulty and pacing, to send you the monthly letter you have subscribed to, and to improve our pedagogical models in aggregate. We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with advertisers. We do not run third-party tracking pixels in our newsletter.
04 Your rights
Under the GDPR and similar regulations, you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete the personal data we hold about you. You may exercise any of these rights by writing to privacy@signal-international.it. We will respond within thirty days. If you wish to delete your account entirely, the deletion is irreversible and occurs within seventy-two hours of your request.
05 Data retention
We retain account data for as long as your account is active. If your account has been inactive for thirty-six months, we will write to you with a warning and, ninety days later, anonymise your viewing history and delete your account information. Speech and gaze data, where collected, is processed ephemerally and never stored.
